• Nagarajan cast Savitri in 'Vadivukku Valaikaappu' (1962) after seeing her in a Telugu film — but she almost said no because the role was a comic sidekick. She only agreed after he rewrote the part to give her a full emotional arc.
• On the set of 'Thiruvilaiyadal' (1965), Nagarajan would block every scene twice — once for the camera, once for Savitri alone. He said she needed to 'feel the god' before she could play the devotee. That film became her most celebrated performance.
• Their 'Navarathri' (1964) — where Savitri played nine different roles — directly inspired K. Balachander's 'Navagraha Nayaki' (1971) and later Kamal Haasan's 'Pushpak' (1987). No one had attempted a single-actor nonet in Tamil before this pair.
• During the shoot of 'Saraswati Sabatham' (1966), Savitri was going through a messy divorce. Nagarajan quietly paid her hotel bills for three months and told the crew she was 'on a special diet' so nobody would gossip. She never publicly thanked him, but she never forgot it.
• Nagarajan once told a magazine: 'Savitri doesn't act. She becomes. I just point the camera and pray she doesn't break the lens.' He said this after the first day of 'Thiruvilaiyadal' shoot.
• In 'Thivarutchelvar' (1967), Nagarajan deliberately gave Savitri no dialogue in the climax — just a close-up of her eyes. He told the crew: 'Her face will say more than my script ever could.' That scene is still studied in Tamil acting workshops.
