• For Kabali (2016), director Pa. Ranjith specifically wanted Kalaiyarasan to play the young Rajinikanth's friend. But Kalaiyarasan was hesitant — he felt the role was too small. John Vijay, who was already cast, personally called him and said, 'Trust Ranjith. This will be a landmark film.' That call sealed the deal.
• In Pattinapakkam (2018), John Vijay played a ruthless rowdy, and Kalaiyarasan played a cop. John kept improvising his dialogue in raw Chennai slang, which threw Kalaiyarasan off in early takes. So John started sending him voice notes of his lines the night before, so Kalaiyarasan could match his rhythm. The final interrogation scene — the one that made the film a hit — was built on that prep.
• Because of their back-and-forth in Kabali, director Pa. Ranjith decided to cast both of them again in his next film — but this time as antagonists. That film never happened. But the idea of pitting them against each other directly inspired the casting of Pattinapakkam (2018), which became a surprise hit and launched a mini-trend of cop-gangster face-offs in low-budget Tamil cinema.
• On the sets of Karungaapiyam (2023), John Vijay and Kalaiyarasan shared a room during the entire 40-day shoot in a remote village near Kodaikanal. Every night, they'd rehearse the next day's scene by acting it out in the dark — no lights, just voices. John later said it was the most intense prep he'd ever done for a film.
• Kalaiyarasan said about John Vijay in a 2023 interview: 'He is the only co-actor who has ever called me at 2 AM to discuss a single line. I used to think I was intense. Then I met John.'
