The Ramana & Ramana Dr partnership

From Ela Cheppanu (2003) to Sullan (2004). The played out closed with Sullan in 2004. It started with Ela Cheppanu (2003).

The shape of the work

Ramana directed every film; Ramana Dr directed all of them.

Partnership facts

  • Before 'Ela Cheppanu' (2003), director Ramana had never worked with a star of Vijayakanth's caliber. He was a relatively new face. Vijayakanth saw something in his raw energy and greenlit the project on the spot — no test shoot, no hesitation.
  • On the sets of 'Thirumalai' (2003), Vijayakanth would often rewrite his own lines in Tamil to make them punchier. Ramana let him do it. The result? The film's most quoted dialogues — like the 'Naan oru thadavu sonna, nooru thadavu sonna madhiri' bit — were Vijayakanth's improvisations, not in the original script.
  • The success of 'Thirumalai' (2003) directly launched the career of music director Srikanth Deva. Before this film, he was an unknown. Ramana and Vijayakanth gave him his first big break, and the soundtrack became a sleeper hit — especially the 'Thirumalai Thirumalai' number that still plays at village festivals.
  • During the shoot of 'Sullan' (2004), Vijayakanth would personally bring filter coffee for the entire crew every morning. Ramana later said in an interview that this ritual made the set feel like a family gathering, not a film set. They never had a single argument across all three films.
  • Ramana once said: 'Vijayakanth sir never asked me to change a single scene for commercial reasons. He trusted my vision completely. That's rare for a star of his stature.' — from a 2004 interview with Ananda Vikatan.
