Partnership facts

• Karagattakaran (1989) was the first time they shared screen space. Director Gangai Amaran cast Kanaka as the female lead opposite Ramarajan, but Goundamani's role as the comic sidekick was written in later. Kanaka had already acted in a few films, but this pairing clicked so well that they were immediately paired again in Amman Kovil Thiruvizha (1990).
• In Samundi (1992), Goundamani's character constantly teases Kanaka's character about her village accent. Kanaka's deadpan reactions — not laughing, just staring — became the scene's secret weapon. She let him do the loud work, and her stillness made his jokes land harder.
• Their comedy track in Karagattakaran (1989) — where Goundamani tries to impress Kanaka by pretending to be a rich city boy — directly inspired a similar subplot in the 1993 hit Chinna Gounder. That film's writer later admitted he rewatched their scenes to study the timing.
• On the sets of Periya Kudumbam (1995), Kanaka would bring homemade snacks for the crew. Goundamani, known for being strict about diet, would quietly take a few pieces of her murukku only when he thought no one was watching. She never told anyone until years later.
• Kanaka once said in a 2017 interview: 'Goundamani sir never made me feel like a junior artiste. He would adjust his timing to match my pace. That's why our scenes looked natural.'
