The 1970s account for 75% of everything they made together. The 1970s belonged to Annai Oru Aalayam; the 1980s to Ram Lakshman. Sripriya acted in every film; R. Thyagarajan directed all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

• Sripriya was already a star when she agreed to work with debutant director R. Thyagarajan on 'Attukara Alamelu' (1977). She trusted him because he had been an assistant to her favorite director, K. Balachander.
• On the sets of 'Annai Oru Aalayam' (1979), Thyagarajan would let Sripriya rewrite her own dialogues in Tamil. She had a better ear for village slang, and he knew it. The result was a performance that felt more natural than anything in her previous films.
• Their third film 'Ram Lakshman' (1981) was the first Tamil movie to cast Sripriya in a double role — as both the mother and the daughter. This trick was later copied by at least three other directors in the 80s.
• After 'Ram Lakshman' flopped, Thyagarajan and Sripriya never spoke again. She later told a magazine that he stopped taking her calls because he was embarrassed by the film's failure. They never made another movie together.
• Sripriya once said in an interview: 'Thyagarajan was the only director who let me be loud without looking cheap. He knew exactly when to pull my hand and when to let me run.'
