• Ravikumar was a relatively new director when he cast Selvaraj as the comic villain in Purusha Lakshanam (1993). Selvaraj was already a veteran character actor, and Ravikumar later admitted he was nervous directing him — until Selvaraj told him on day one: 'Just tell me what you want, I’ll do it your way.' That trust set the tone for their next two films.
• In Muthu (1995), Ravikumar gave Selvaraj a rare solo comedy track — the 'Kattikittan' scene where Selvaraj’s character tries to impress a woman with broken English. Selvaraj improvised most of the dialogue, and Ravikumar kept the camera rolling. That scene became a cult favourite in Tamil comedy circles.
• The success of Muthu (1995) in Japan — it ran for over a year in Tokyo — directly led to Selvaraj being invited to a Japanese film festival in 1996. He was the only supporting actor from the film to get a personal invite. Ravikumar pushed for him to go, saying Selvaraj’s face was 'the one Japan remembered'.
• On the sets of Padayappa (1999), Selvaraj would bring homemade snacks from his village every Friday. Ravikumar would stop shooting for 15 minutes so the entire crew could eat together. Selvaraj’s son later said his father considered those Friday breaks 'the best part of working with Ravikumar'.
• Ravikumar once said in a 2001 interview: 'Idichapuli Selvaraj is the only actor who could make me laugh so hard I forgot to say 'cut'. In Muthu, I let him run wild because I knew he’d land the joke better than my script.'
