The K. S. Ravikumar & Ramya Krishnan partnership

After 15 years apart, they came back together for Thaanaa Serndha Koottam (2018). They didn't share a set between 2003 and 2018. They saved their best for last — Thaanaa Serndha Koottam (6.6/10) came 19 years in.

Their work runs across 3 decades of Tamil cinema. The work is uneven: Thaanaa Serndha Koottam (6.6) at one end, Paattali (1.0) at the other.

The shape of the work

The 1990s belonged to Padayappa; the 2010s to Thaanaa Serndha Koottam. K. S. Ravikumar directed every film; Ramya Krishnan acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Ramya Krishnan was not the first choice for Neelambari in Padayappa. K. S. Ravikumar had already signed another actress. But Ramya auditioned with a single dialogue — and he changed the entire casting on the spot.
  • In Panchathanthiram, Ravikumar wrote the character of 'Karpagavalli' specifically to break Ramya's serious image. He told her to improvise every line in the comedy scenes. She ended up ad-libbing the entire 'mutton curry' rant — which became the film's most replayed moment.
  • The success of Padayappa directly led to the creation of the 'mass heroine' template in Tamil cinema. Before Neelambari, female leads were mostly decorative. After her, every major star wanted a Ramya-style antagonist-love interest. Even the character of 'Sita' in Baahubali owes a debt to this role.
  • On the sets of Paattali, Ravikumar and Ramya had a running bet: every time she delivered a dialogue without a single retake, he had to buy her a pack of filter coffee from the canteen. By the end of the shoot, he owed her 47 cups.
  • Ramya Krishnan once said in an interview: 'Ravikumar sir is the only director who made me feel like a villain and a heroine in the same scene. He trusted me to be ugly and beautiful at the same time.'
  • After Padayappa became a blockbuster, Ravikumar immediately signed Ramya for Paattali without even narrating the script. He just said: 'You're playing a village girl who fights a landlord. That's all you need to know.' She said yes over the phone.
