Partnership facts

• Chandrababu was already a comedy star when he insisted on casting Rajam as his leading lady in 'Kavalai Illaadha Manithan' (1960). The director wanted a more established actress, but Babu said no — he wanted her deadpan timing to bounce off his manic energy.
• In 'Petra Manam' (1960), Rajam would deliberately pause her lines a beat longer than written. Chandrababu then filled that silence with improvised mutters and double-takes. That push-and-pull — her stillness, his overflow — became their signature rhythm.
• Their third film 'Kumara Raja' (1961) directly inspired the comedy track in 'Thillana Mohanambal' (1968). Director A. P. Nagarajan watched their scenes and told his writer: 'Give me that exact energy — the nervous husband and the wife who sees through everything.'
• On the sets of all three films, Chandrababu would rehearse his lines with Rajam in the makeup room — not with the director. He told her once: 'You don't laugh at my jokes. That's why I trust you. You tell me when it's actually funny.'
• Rajam said in a 1972 interview: 'Babu would whisper the next line to me while the camera was rolling. He didn't want me to act — he wanted me to react. That's why our scenes felt like a real argument.'
