Partnership facts

• Priyadarshan cast Arbaaz Khan in Hulchul (1995) after seeing him in a small role in Darr. Arbaaz was still finding his footing, and Priyadarshan gave him his first proper comic role — a gamble that paid off.
• On the sets of Bhagam Bhag (2006), Priyadarshan realized Arbaaz was a natural at deadpan reactions. He started writing scenes where Arbaaz’s character would just stand still while chaos exploded around him — that became the comic anchor of the film.
• Malamaal Weekly (2006) was the first Hindi film where Priyadarshan used a lottery win as the central plot device. That idea later inspired a whole wave of small-town lottery comedies in Bollywood, including Arbaaz’s own production Pati Patni Aur Woh (2019).
• Priyadarshan and Arbaaz Khan stayed close even after their last film together. Arbaaz was one of the first people Priyadarshan called when he decided to shift back to Malayalam cinema in 2010 — they still meet for dinner whenever Arbaaz is in Kerala.
• Arbaaz Khan once said in an interview: 'Priyadarshan is the only director who made me look like a comedian. I didn’t know I had that in me until he put me in Hulchul.'
• In Dhol (2007), Priyadarshan deliberately paired Arbaaz with Tusshar Kapoor because Arbaaz’s straight-man energy balanced Tusshar’s over-the-top antics. He told Arbaaz to play every scene like he was the only sane person in a madhouse — that contrast made the comedy land harder.
