• Roja Selvamani was a rising star when she signed Suriyan (1992), but Manorama was already a legend. The director paired them specifically to give Roja's character emotional weight — Manorama played her mother, and their first scene together was shot in one take because Manorama refused to rehearse, saying 'real tears can't be scheduled.'
• In Veeram Velanja Mannu (1998), Manorama deliberately slowed down her dialogue delivery during their confrontation scene. She told Roja later: 'I wanted you to catch up to me, not the other way around.' That scene became the film's most talked-about moment — Roja's raw anger matched Manorama's controlled fury beat for beat.
• On the sets of Thirunelveli (2000), Manorama would make Roja sit with her during lunch breaks and teach her the exact hand gestures used in old-school Tamil stage dramas. Roja later said those sessions changed how she used her hands in emotional scenes — you can see the difference in her performance from the first half to the second half of that film.
• Roja Selvamani once said in a 2007 interview: 'Manorama akka never let me feel like a junior artist. She would whisper the next line in my ear if I forgot it — but she'd do it in a way that the camera couldn't tell. She protected me on screen.'
• Their last film together, Pasa Kiligal (2006), was the only one where Manorama played a villain opposite Roja. The film's climax — where Roja's character slaps Manorama — was so intense that the director had to call cut twice because the crew was crying. That scene is still used in Tamil television as a reference for mother-daughter conflict scenes.
