Partnership facts

• Ravichandran was already a star when he agreed to do 'Madras To Pondicherry' (1966), but he insisted on casting Thirumalai Mahalingam as his co-star — TM was a stage actor with zero film experience at that point. Ravichandran personally vouched for him to the producer.
• On the sets of 'Kathal Jyothi' (1970), Ravichandran would deliberately flub his lines in the first take just to make TM laugh and loosen up. TM later said that Ravichandran's playful teasing was the only reason he stopped being nervous in front of the camera.
• After 'Pudhiya Manidhan' (1974) flopped, Ravichandran and TM never spoke again. No public fight — just silence. TM later told a magazine that Ravichandran stopped returning his calls, and he never found out why.
• Thirumalai Mahalingam once said in a 1975 interview: 'Ravichandran was the only actor who made me feel like I belonged on screen. Without him, I was just a stage actor with a borrowed face.'
• The success of 'Madras To Pondicherry' (1966) directly led to a wave of road-trip comedies in Tamil cinema over the next five years — at least four films copied its 'two strangers stuck on a journey' premise.
