• Poornam Vishwanathan was a theatre veteran with zero film experience when Charlie cast him in Ore Oru Gramathiley (1987). Charlie saw him in a stage play, walked up after the show, and offered him the role on the spot. Vishwanathan later said he thought it was a prank.
• In Varusham Padhinaaru (1989), Charlie played the loud, impulsive younger brother while Vishwanathan played the quiet, suffering elder. Charlie deliberately slowed his own dialogue delivery in every scene they shared — he told the director he wanted Vishwanathan’s silences to hit harder.
