• Charlie was a popular comedian in the 80s, but Major Sundarrajan was a respected character actor. They first shared screen in Thulasi (1987) because the director wanted a contrast — Charlie's manic energy against Sundarrajan's stern authority. No one had paired them before.
• In Purusha Lakshanam (1993), Charlie did most of the physical comedy while Sundarrajan delivered deadpan reactions. Sundarrajan would deliberately pause his lines to let Charlie's expressions land first. That timing became their signature.
• After Thulasi, Sundarrajan personally recommended Charlie for a role in another project. Charlie later said Sundarrajan treated him like a younger brother on set — always checking if he had eaten between shots.
• Charlie once told a magazine: 'Major Sundarrajan sir never laughed at my jokes on set. He said if he laughed, the audience wouldn't. He was my toughest audience.'
• Their third film Velai (1998) was a rare attempt at a buddy comedy with a serious undertone. It didn't work at the box office, but it inspired a later generation of Tamil comedians to try mixing slapstick with social commentary.
