• Shalini was already a star when she signed Osai (1984), but K. Vijayan was a relatively new director. He convinced her to take the role by promising a script that would let her break out of her 'sweet girl' image — and she took a pay cut to make it happen.
• On the sets of Bandham (1985), Vijayan would let Shalini rewrite her own dialogues in Tamil. She had a sharper ear for colloquial speech than he did, and he trusted her instinct over his own script — a rare move for a director at the time.
• During Viduthalai (1986), Shalini and Vijayan had a falling out over a scene she felt was too violent for her character. They didn't speak for three days on set. A mutual friend had to mediate before they finished the film.
• The success of Bandham (1985) directly led to Vijayan being offered his next big project — a film that launched a new supporting actor who later became a household name in Tamil cinema. That actor credits Shalini's performance in Bandham for getting him noticed.
• Years later, Shalini said in an interview: 'Vijayan was the only director who made me cry on set and then laugh about it five minutes later. He knew exactly which button to push.'
• Vijayan originally wanted a different actress for Osai (1984). Shalini heard about the script through a mutual contact and called him directly to ask for a meeting. She walked in with notes she'd written on the story — and he changed his mind on the spot.
