The Rajinikanth & V. C. Guhanathan partnership

From Mangudi Minor (1978) to Manithan (1987). The unfolded closed with Manithan in 1987. It started with Mangudi Minor (1978).

The shape of the work

The 1980s account for 75% of everything they made together. The 1970s belonged to Mangudi Minor; the 1980s to Thanikattu Raja. Never on the same side of the camera — Rajinikanth actor, V. C. Guhanathan director, across all 4 films. Mostly Tamil, with 1 film in Hindi.

Partnership facts

  • Rajinikanth was already a star when he signed Mangudi Minor (1978), but he chose Guhanathan — then a relatively unknown director — because he liked the raw energy of the script. Guhanathan later said Rajini walked into his office and said, 'I'll do it. No changes to the story.'
  • On the sets of Thanikattu Raja (1982), Guhanathan would let Rajinikanth improvise entire dialogue stretches. Rajini would then ask Guhanathan to film two takes — one exactly as written, one with his own lines. The final cut always used Rajini's version.
  • During the shoot of Aaj Ka Dada (1985), Rajinikanth personally drove Guhanathan to the hospital at 2 AM when the director had a severe back spasm. Guhanathan later told a magazine that Rajini stayed in the waiting room until sunrise.
  • The success of Thanikattu Raja (1982) directly led to Guhanathan being offered his next big project — a film with Sivaji Ganesan. Rajinikanth had recommended him to the producer over dinner.
  • Guhanathan once said in a 1990 interview: 'Rajini never treated me like a director. He treated me like a friend who happened to hold a megaphone. That's why our films feel like two friends talking, not a star and a director.'
  • In Mangudi Minor (1978), Guhanathan deliberately shot Rajinikanth's fight scenes in long, unbroken takes — no cuts. He wanted the audience to see Rajini's real stamina. Rajini later said that style made him push harder physically.
