The Rajinikanth & Amitabh Bachchan partnership

After 33 years apart, they came back together for Vettaiyan (2024). They didn't share a set between 1991 and 2024. Their work runs across 3 decades of Hindi cinema.

From Andha Kanoon (1983) to Vettaiyan (2024). Their most recent film, Vettaiyan, came out in 2024 — the partnership is still active.

The shape of the work

The 1980s belonged to Andha Kanoon; the 2020s to Vettaiyan. Rajinikanth acted in every film; Amitabh Bachchan acted in all of them. Mostly Hindi, with 1 film in Tamil.

Partnership facts

  • Rajinikanth was already a huge star in Tamil cinema when he signed Andha Kanoon (1983), but Amitabh Bachchan was the bigger draw in Hindi. The director, T. Rama Rao, deliberately wrote a role where Rajini gets equal screen time — and even a separate fight sequence — to avoid a clash of egos.
  • In Geraftaar (1985), Amitabh and Rajinikanth play brothers who don't know each other's identity. The film's climax has them fighting side-by-side — but the real trick was pacing: Amitabh delivered his lines in his signature baritone, while Rajini matched him with rapid-fire Tamil-accented Hindi. The contrast made the scene crackle.
  • Hum (1991) was the last time they shared screen space in a Hindi film. But the film's success directly led to Rajinikanth being offered bigger Hindi roles — he turned them all down to focus on Tamil cinema. So this trio of films accidentally cemented his decision to never become a full-time Bollywood star.
  • On the sets of Andha Kanoon, Amitabh would often invite Rajinikanth to his vanity van for chai. Rajini later said Amitabh treated him like a younger brother — no starry airs, just two actors talking about shot compositions. They never had a single reported fight across all three films.
  • Rajinikanth once said in an interview: 'Amitabh Bachchan is the only actor I felt nervous acting with. He doesn't act — he becomes the character. I had to raise my game every single scene.' He said this during the promotion of Hum (1991).
  • In Andha Kanoon, Amitabh plays a deaf-mute for most of the film. Rajinikanth's character does all the talking — and the comedy. This forced Rajini to carry the dialogue-heavy scenes alone, while Amitabh reacted with only his eyes. It's the only Hindi film where Rajini out-talks Bachchan.
