• Shobana was the bigger star when they first paired up for Paattukku Oru Thalaivan (1989). Vijayakanth was still building his action-hero image. The director, Manivannan, bet on her name to pull in family audiences for a film that was essentially a Vijayakanth vehicle.
• In En Kitta Mothathey (1990), Shobana’s comic timing forced Vijayakanth to loosen up. He was known for his intense, dialogue-heavy style. She kept breaking his rhythm with spontaneous reactions, and the director let those takes stay. That film is the only one of their three where he actually smiles on screen.
• Ponmana Selvan (1989) was a box-office dud, but it directly led to En Kitta Mothathey. The producer of the flop, K. R. G., was so impressed by their off-screen rapport during the shoot that he greenlit a second film with the same pair — this time a comedy. That film became a sleeper hit.
• During the making of Paattukku Oru Thalaivan, Vijayakanth would drive Shobana to the set every morning. She didn’t have a car in Madras then. He never mentioned it in interviews. She only revealed it years later in a casual chat on a TV show.
• Shobana once said: 'Vijayakanth was the only co-star who never tried to flirt. He treated me like a younger sister. That’s why I felt safe doing comedy with him.' She said this in a 1991 interview with a Tamil weekly.
