• Indra Kumar was a total unknown when he cast Anil Kapoor in Beta (1992). Anil was already a star. Kumar had only directed one film before — the flop Love Love Love. Anil took a chance on him because he liked the script. That gamble paid off: Beta became the highest-grossing film of 1992.
• On the sets of Beta (1992), Anil Kapoor would constantly push Indra Kumar to let him improvise dialogue. Kumar initially resisted — he had a tight script. But after Anil ad-libbed the line 'Main aapki ungli pakad ke chalta hoon' in a key scene, Kumar let him rewrite half his lines. That scene became the film's most quoted moment.
• Because Beta (1992) was such a monster hit, Indra Kumar and Anil Kapoor decided to reunite for Mann (1999). That film directly launched the career of Sharmila Tagore's son — Saif Ali Khan. Saif played the second lead. Before Mann, Saif was struggling. After it, he got his first major solo hit. None of that happens if Kumar and Kapoor don't team up again.
• Anil Kapoor and Indra Kumar never became close friends. They were strictly professional. On the sets of Rishtey (2002), they barely spoke outside shots. Anil once told a journalist: 'We don't have dinner together. We don't call each other. But when the camera rolls, we know exactly what the other wants.'
• Indra Kumar said about Anil Kapoor in a 2002 interview: 'He is the only actor who would call me at 3 AM to discuss a single line. I would scream at him. But then he would deliver that line on set and the whole unit would clap. I learned to trust his madness.'
