He made his film debut in Shyam Benegal's Kalyug (1981) and went on to notable roles in Naam (1986), Beta (1992), Sarfarosh (1999), and more recently Sector 36 (2024) and Dhurandhar (2025). A trained engineer with an M.Phil and PhD from TISS, he is frequently cast in father figures and authority roles, and has also worked as a screenwriter on 20+ films. He trained in theatre under luminaries Satyadev Dubey and Naseeruddin Shah, and his son Akarsh Khurana is a noted Bollywood director.
