• Sonali Bendre was a huge Bollywood star when she signed Kadhalar Dhinam (1999). Kathir was a newcomer. The director, Kathir, specifically wrote the female lead for her after seeing her in Hindi films — he wanted a fresh face opposite his own debut.
• In Kadhalar Dhinam, Kathir played a shy, stammering lover. Sonali had to carry most of the emotional weight in their scenes — she set the pace, and he followed her lead. That contrast made their pairing work: she was the confident one, he was the vulnerable one.
• Sonali and Kathir stayed in touch long after the films. She once said in an interview that he was the only co-star who would call her just to check in, not for work. They remained friends through her cancer battle in 2018.
