• Appukutty once said in a 2017 interview: 'Manobala sir is the only director who let me be myself on screen. Other directors want me to act. He just wanted me to exist.'
• Appukutty was a last-minute replacement in Mudhal Idam (2011). The original actor backed out, and Manobala, who was directing, called Appukutty at 2 AM. He showed up on set the next morning without even reading the script.
• In Urumeen (2015), Manobala deliberately slowed down his own dialogue delivery to match Appukutty's natural rhythm. He told the crew, 'Let him set the pace — I'll follow.' That scene where they argue in the rain? Entirely improvised by Appukutty, with Manobala reacting live.
• Their film Engalukku Veru Kilaigal Kidaiyathu (2015) directly inspired the 'odd-couple road trip' trend in low-budget Tamil comedies. Two years later, a small-budget film called 'Aandavan Kattalai' used the exact same premise — two strangers forced to travel together — and credited this film in its press notes.
• On the sets of Sowkarpettai (2016), Manobala and Appukutty had a running bet: whoever flubbed a line first had to buy the entire crew biryani. Appukutty lost every single day. By the end of the shoot, he'd spent nearly ₹15,000 on biryani.
