The Manobala & Singamuthu partnership

Their work runs across 3 decades of Tamil cinema. From Kadhal Kirukkan (2003) to Dhadha (2022). It started with Kadhal Kirukkan (2003).

The shape of the work

The 2000s belonged to Vathiyar; the 2020s to Dhadha. Manobala acted in every film; Singamuthu acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Manobala cast Singamuthu in 'Thulli Vilayadu' (2013) after seeing him in a small comedy role in another film. Singamuthu was hesitant to take on a full-length comic lead, but Manobala convinced him by rewriting the character to match his natural timing.
  • On the sets of 'Mapla Singam' (2016), Manobala would let Singamuthu improvise entire dialogue stretches. Singamuthu's ad-libs often changed the scene's direction, and Manobala would then rewrite the next scene to match the new tone — a back-and-forth that became their working rhythm.
  • The success of 'Pakka' (2018) — their only hit together — directly led to Singamuthu being cast as a lead in two other comedy films the following year. Before 'Pakka', he was only getting supporting roles.
  • Manobala and Singamuthu never had a formal contract for any of their five films. They worked on handshake deals. Singamuthu once said in an interview that Manobala would call him, say the budget, and he'd show up — no paperwork, no dates locked.
  • In 'Dhadha' (2022), their last film together, Manobala deliberately gave Singamuthu a dramatic scene with no comedy — a first in their partnership. Singamuthu later said that scene was the hardest thing he'd ever done, and Manobala shot it in one take to keep the tension raw.
