• Chandran was a top comedian in the 80s, but Amala was a rising star. They first shared screen in Mythili Ennai Kaathali (1986) because director R. Sundarrajan needed a pair who could handle both comedy and emotional weight — and Chandran specifically asked for Amala after seeing her debut.
• In Panneer Nadhigal (1986), Chandran played a comic sidekick while Amala played the lead. Their scenes worked because Chandran deliberately slowed his comic timing to let Amala's reactions land first — a trick he used to make her look more natural in comedy.
• Amala later said in an interview that Chandran would rehearse their scenes with her in his car between shots, because he didn't want her to feel nervous on set. They stayed friends long after the films — she even visited him in hospital in the 2000s.
• Their third film together, Mappillai (1989), was a massive hit — but it's also the film that launched Rajinikanth's iconic 'Mappillai' persona. Amala and Chandran's comic subplot in that film directly inspired a wave of 'sidekick-and-heroine' pairings in early 90s Tamil cinema.
