• They first worked together in Dard Ka Rishta (1982), but the pairing almost didn't happen. The director, Ambrish Sangal, originally wanted a younger actress for Smita's role. Ashok Kumar personally insisted on casting her, arguing she had the gravitas to play a mother grieving a child.
• On the set of Farishta (1984), Ashok Kumar would deliberately flub his lines in the first take to make Smita Patil laugh. She later said this broke her tension and let her match his natural, offbeat timing — a trick he used to pull younger co-stars into his rhythm.
• During the shoot of Awam (1987), Smita Patil was pregnant with her son Prateik. Ashok Kumar, then in his late 70s, would bring her homemade digestive biscuits between shots, telling her, 'You're eating for two now, but don't let the food coma ruin your close-up.'
• Smita Patil once said of Ashok Kumar: 'He taught me that acting is not about showing emotion — it's about hiding it. On the set of Dard Ka Rishta, he told me, "The camera catches what you don't do." I've never forgotten that.'
