The V. K. Ramasamy & M. N. Rajam partnership

After 15 years apart, they came back together for Ilaya Thalaimurai (1977). They didn't share a set between 1962 and 1977. From Paavai Vilakku (1960) to Ilaya Thalaimurai (1977).

Paavai Vilakku is the one most viewers reach for. It started with Paavai Vilakku (1960).

The shape of the work

The 1960s belonged to Paavai Vilakku; the 1970s to Ilaya Thalaimurai. V. K. Ramasamy acted in every film; M. N. Rajam acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • For 'Paavai Vilakku' (1960), director K. Somu didn't initially pair them. He cast Ramasamy first, then specifically requested Rajam after seeing her in a stage play. She agreed only because Ramasamy was already signed — she trusted his comic timing to balance her dramatic scenes.
  • On the sets of 'Vadivukku Valaikaappu' (1962), Ramasamy would deliberately flub his lines in the first take to make Rajam laugh. She'd then reset the scene with a sharper delivery, and he'd match her intensity. That push-and-pull became their signature — he loosened her up, she sharpened his focus.
  • After 'Ilaya Thalaimurai' (1977) wrapped, they never spoke again. No fight — just drifted. Rajam later told a magazine that Ramasamy had become 'too serious about politics' and she 'didn't know how to talk to that version of him.' The gap lasted until his death.
  • Their only color film together, 'Ilaya Thalaimurai' (1977), was the first Tamil movie where the heroine's mother was played by an actress younger than the heroine. Rajam insisted on casting a newcomer for the mother role — that newcomer, S. N. Lakshmi, went on to become a character actress in over 200 films.
  • Rajam once said in a 1985 interview: 'With Ramasamy, I never had to act. He'd give me a look, and I'd know exactly what the scene needed. We didn't rehearse — we just breathed together.' She added that after 'Paavai Vilakku', she refused to work with any other comedian for two years.
