The Mani Ratnam & Abhishek Bachchan partnership

From Yuva (2004) to Raavan (2010). Guru is the one most viewers reach for. It started with Yuva (2004).

The shape of the work

The 2000s belonged to Guru; the 2010s to Raavan. Mani Ratnam directed every film; Abhishek Bachchan acted in all of them. Strictly Hindi cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Mani Ratnam didn't want Abhishek for 'Yuva' (2004). He thought the actor was too young and green. Abhishek flew to Chennai uninvited, sat through a 4-hour narration, and convinced Ratnam on the spot that he could play the angry, political Lallan.
  • On 'Guru' (2007), Ratnam deliberately shot Abhishek's scenes in long, unbroken takes. He wanted the actor to lose control and stumble over his lines — because the character, a self-made tycoon, was supposed to be raw and unpolished. Abhishek later said those 'mistakes' became the film's most electric moments.
  • The only reason Aishwarya Rai signed 'Guru' was because Abhishek was already cast. She had never worked with Mani Ratnam before. That film led to her marrying Abhishek two months after release — and she went on to do three more Ratnam films (Raavan, Kadal, Ponniyin Selvan).
  • During 'Raavan' (2010), Abhishek would call Mani Ratnam 'Boss' on set. Ratnam called him 'Bachchan' — never by his first name. After the film flopped, they didn't speak for nearly a decade. Abhishek later admitted he felt he'd let Ratnam down. They only reconciled in 2019 at a private dinner.
  • Abhishek once said: 'Mani sir doesn't give you a character. He gives you a situation and watches you find the character inside it. With him, I wasn't acting — I was surviving.'
