The Kamal Haasan & K. Natraj partnership

Between 1976 and 1982, they barely worked apart — 5 films in 6 years. For 6 years, a Kamal–K. film arrived almost every year. From Moondru Mudichu (1976) to Moondram Pirai (1982).

The spanned closed with Moondram Pirai in 1982. Moondru Mudichu is the one most viewers reach for.

The shape of the work

The 1980s account for 60% of everything they made together. The 1970s belonged to Moondru Mudichu; the 1980s to Moondram Pirai. Kamal Haasan acted in every film; K. Natraj acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Kamal Haasan was already a star when he signed Aadu Puli Attam (1977), but he specifically asked for K. Natraj to direct it. Natraj had only assisted on a few films before that. Kamal bet on a rookie.
  • On the sets of Ullasa Paravaigal (1980), Natraj let Kamal improvise most of his comedy lines. Kamal would rewrite dialogues in the morning, and Natraj would just adjust the blocking. That film's freewheeling humour came from that trust.
  • Maria, My Darling (1980) was the first Tamil film to use a single actor (Kamal) in a dual role with a split-screen effect that required no body double. Natraj and Kamal storyboarded every frame together because the technology was new to the industry.
  • After Maria, My Darling flopped, Natraj and Kamal never worked together again. But Kamal quietly recommended Natraj to other producers for years. Natraj later said in an interview that Kamal 'never asked for a cut or credit' for those referrals.
  • K. Natraj once said: 'Kamal would call me at 3 AM with a new idea for a scene. I'd say yes just to get him off the phone. But the next morning, the idea was always brilliant.'
