• Subhash Ghai cast them as polar opposites in Karma (1986) — Naseeruddin Shah played the terrorist Dr. Dang, Shakti Kapoor played the comic sidekick. Ghai deliberately wanted the audience to hate one and laugh at the other, so they never shared a single scene together.
• On the set of Tune Mera Dil Le Liyaa (2000), Naseeruddin Shah reportedly told the director that Shakti Kapoor's comic timing was so sharp he had to stop himself from laughing mid-take. Shakti, in turn, said Naseer's intensity made him raise his own game.
• Despite playing a terrorist and a buffoon in Karma, the two became close friends during the shoot. Shakti Kapoor later said Naseeruddin Shah was the only co-star who would call him just to check if he was okay — no film talk, just life.
