The Raadhika Sarathkumar & Prathap K. Pothan partnership

After 29 years apart, they came back together for Poojai (2014). They didn't share a set between 1985 and 2014. From Ilamai Kolam (1980) to Poojai (2014).

It started with Ilamai Kolam (1980).

The shape of the work

The 1980s belonged to Ilamai Kolam; the 2010s to Poojai. Raadhika Sarathkumar acted in every film; Prathap K. Pothan acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • For Ilamai Kolam (1980), director C. V. Sridhar cast Raadhika and Prathap as a fresh pair because he wanted two relatively new faces who could play college students without makeup. Prathap was a Malayalam import, Raadhika was already a star in Telugu — Sridhar bet on their awkwardness together.
  • In Meendum Oru Kadal Kathai (1985), Prathap played a brooding, silent fisherman. Raadhika later said in an interview that Prathap would deliberately not look at her during rehearsals, so that when the camera rolled, his sudden eye contact would shock her into a real reaction. She called it 'acting without acting'.
  • After Ilamai Kolam wrapped, Prathap gifted Raadhika a hand-painted wooden box with a note that read 'For the girl who made me forget my lines.' She still keeps it in her Chennai home. They never dated, but remained close enough that she called him 'Anna' for decades.
  • Meendum Oru Kadal Kathai was the first Tamil film to use a single continuous underwater shot for a romantic scene. The director, J. Mahendran, made Raadhika and Prathap hold their breath for 45 seconds while a handheld camera floated between them. That shot inspired a generation of Tamil underwater cinematography.
  • Prathap K. Pothan once said about Raadhika: 'She has this dangerous quality — she can make you feel like you're the only person in the room, then cut you with a single line. I had to stay on my toes every scene.' He said this in a 1986 interview with Ananda Vikatan.
  • Poojai (2014) was their reunion after 29 years. Raadhika personally called Prathap and asked him to play her husband. He agreed without reading the script. On set, she told the director: 'Don't give him too many lines. He'll steal the scene.'
