Partnership facts

• Director S. P. Muthuraman cast them together for the first time in 'Raghupathi Raghavan Rajaram' (1977) after seeing their individual comic timing in stage plays. Moorthy was a regular in Muthuraman's films, but Suruli Rajan was a last-minute replacement for another comedian who dropped out.
• In 'Ullasa Paravaigal' (1980), Moorthy played the straight man to Suruli Rajan's manic energy. Moorthy would deliberately pause his lines to let Suruli Rajan's physical comedy land — a rhythm they perfected across all three films.
• Their double-act in 'Muyalakku Moonu Kaal' (1980) directly inspired the comedy track in the 1985 hit 'Naan Sigappu Manithan' — director S. A. Chandrasekhar admitted he rewatched their scenes to study how to balance two comedians without one overshadowing the other.
• On the sets of 'Raghupathi Raghavan Rajaram', Suruli Rajan would bring homemade snacks from his village and share them only with Moorthy during lunch breaks. The rest of the crew was not invited.
• Moorthy once said in a 1995 interview: 'Suruli Rajan never rehearsed. He'd just look at me and say, "Nee pesu, naan pannuven" (You speak, I'll do). That trust made our scenes feel alive.'
