The Jayalalitha & C. V. Rajendran partnership

Between 1968 and 1972, they barely worked apart — 4 films in 4 years. For 4 years, a Jayalalitha–C. film arrived almost every year. From Galatta Kalyanam (1968) to Raja (1972).

The unfolded closed with Raja in 1972. Galatta Kalyanam is the one most viewers reach for.

The shape of the work

The 1970s account for 75% of everything they made together. The 1960s belonged to Galatta Kalyanam; the 1970s to Raja. Jayalalitha acted in every film; C. V. Rajendran directed all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Jayalalitha was already a huge star when she agreed to do Galatta Kalyanam (1968). But C. V. Rajendran was a relatively new director. She took a risk on him because she liked the script — and that film became the launchpad for his career as a top commercial director.
  • Rajendran knew Jayalalitha had a sharp comic timing that most directors ignored. In Galatta Kalyanam, he gave her long, fast-paced dialogue sequences where she had to banter with the hero. She later said those scenes were the most fun she ever had on a set.
  • On the sets of Sumathi En Sundari (1971), Jayalalitha would often rewrite her own lines in Tamil. Rajendran never objected. He trusted her ear for the language more than his own. They'd sit together after pack-up and polish the next day's scenes.
  • Raja (1972) was the first Tamil film where Jayalalitha played a double role — as both the mother and the daughter. That performance directly inspired K. Balachander to cast her in the iconic dual role in Avargal (1977).
  • Years later, when asked about her favorite directors, Jayalalitha said: 'C. V. Rajendran never treated me like a star. He treated me like an actor. That's why I did four films with him.'
  • After Needhi (1972), they never worked together again. No fight, no fallout — Rajendran just moved into producing, and Jayalalitha's political career took over. But they stayed in touch. He was one of the few film people she invited to her private birthday dinners in the 1990s.
