• Their first film together, Pennbuthi Pin Buthi (1989), almost didn't happen. Director S. A. Chandrasekhar paired them because he wanted two actors who could trade rapid-fire comedy without stepping on each other's lines. Ramki was the rising hero; Goundamani was already a comedy star. Chandrasekhar bet the film's comic rhythm on them clicking cold — no rehearsal, just a shared instinct.
• In Aahaa Enna Porutham (1997), Goundamani would deliberately speed up his delivery mid-scene to throw Ramki off. Ramki, instead of fighting it, learned to pause and let Goundamani's punchline land, then counter with a deadpan reaction. That push-and-pull — one rushing, one holding — became their signature comic rhythm.
• Their 27-year gap between the first and third film (1989 to 2016) is itself a ripple: Vaaimai (2016) was made only because a new generation of Tamil comedy writers, who grew up watching their Pennbuthi Pin Buthi scenes on TV reruns, begged director R. K. Selvamani to reunite them. That film directly inspired a wave of 'comeback comedy pairs' in Tamil cinema.
• Off-screen, they never hung out. Ramki has said in interviews that Goundamani was intensely private and would vanish to his room the moment the director yelled 'cut'. Their entire relationship was built on set, in the 10 minutes between takes, where they'd silently nod at each other — no phone numbers exchanged, no dinners. Just work.
• Ramki once told a Tamil magazine: 'Goundamani sir doesn't need a co-star. He needs a wall to bounce off. I was that wall. If I laughed at his joke, the scene was dead. I had to stay stone-faced so his comedy could breathe.'
