• Zeenat Aman was the one who pushed Umesh Mehra to cast her as the lead in Alibaba Aur 40 Chor (1979). Mehra had initially planned a male-heavy adventure, but Zeenat convinced him to expand her role as Marjina — and she ended up being the film's most memorable element.
• On the set of Ashanti (1982), Zeenat Aman and Umesh Mehra had a running joke: she would deliberately mess up her lines in the first take to make him laugh, and he would retaliate by calling 'cut' right when she was in the middle of an intense emotional scene. The crew said it kept the mood light during the grueling outdoor shoot.
• Their third film together, Sohni Mahiwal (1984), was the first Hindi film to be shot entirely in the deserts of Rajasthan and Gujarat — and it directly inspired the look of later desert romances like Lagaan (2001). Mehra later said Zeenat's insistence on shooting on location forced the entire crew to innovate with water and heat management.
• Zeenat Aman and Umesh Mehra remained close friends long after their films ended. When Mehra's son was born in 1986, Zeenat was the first person he called from the hospital — and she flew in from a shoot in Kashmir to be at the naming ceremony the next day.
• Zeenat Aman once said about Umesh Mehra: 'He was the only director who let me rewrite my own lines. He trusted my instinct for dialogue more than his own script.' She said this in a 1992 interview with Stardust magazine.
