Partnership facts

• Their first film together, Mel Maruvathoor Athiparasakthi (1985), was a low-budget devotional drama that nobody expected to work. Vijaya was already a star; Jagadeesan was a newcomer. She personally insisted he be cast as the male lead after seeing him in a stage play.
• On set, Vijaya would often rewrite her own lines to give Jagadeesan more screen time. She felt he was too talented to be just a supporting face. He later said she 'taught him how to act with his eyes' during the climax of Samayaburathale Satshi (1985).
• Their 1986 film Mel Maruvathoor Arpudhangal was such a disaster (1/10 ratings across the board) that it killed the entire devotional film trend in Tamil cinema for nearly two years. No major producer touched the genre again until 1988.
• During the shoot of Bathil Solval Bathrakali (1986), Vijaya's mother passed away. Jagadeesan drove six hours to her village to attend the funeral, even though they had only known each other for a year. He was the only co-star there.
• Jagadeesan once told a magazine: 'Vijaya akka would scold me if I flubbed a line, but she'd also make sure the director gave me a close-up. She treated me like her younger brother, not a co-star.'
• Their last film together, Kai Koduppal Karpagambal (1988), was the only one where they played a married couple. It flopped so hard that both of them stopped doing devotional films entirely. Vijaya moved to character roles; Jagadeesan quit acting within two years.
