The Manoj Joshi & Asrani partnership

After 8 years apart, they came back together for Dream Girl 2 (2023). Their work runs across 3 decades of Hindi cinema. They didn't share a set between 2015 and 2023.

From Kyon Ki (2005) to Bhooth Bangla (2026). Their most recent film, Bhooth Bangla, came out in 2026 — the partnership is still active.

The shape of the work

The 2000s belonged to Bhool Bhulaiyaa; the 2020s to Dream Girl 2. Manoj Joshi acted in every film; Asrani acted in all of them. Strictly Hindi cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Manoj Joshi and Asrani first shared screen space in 'Chal Chala Chal' (2009) because director Rajkumar Kohli specifically wanted two veteran comic actors who could bounce off each other without stepping on each other's lines. Kohli told them to treat every scene like a tennis rally — one serves, the other returns.
  • In 'Kushti' (2010), Asrani would deliberately flub a line in the first take to make Joshi laugh, then use that genuine reaction in the final cut. Joshi later admitted he never knew which take was the real one — so he stayed alert and sharp throughout every scene.
  • During the shoot of 'Chor Bazaari' (2015), Joshi and Asrani shared a vanity van because the budget was too tight for separate ones. They ended up writing alternate dialogues together on napkins between takes — none of which made the final film, but both said it was the most fun they'd ever had on set.
  • Asrani once said about Joshi: 'He is the only actor who can make me forget my lines because I'm too busy watching him work. I told him, "You're a thief — you steal the scene without moving a muscle."'
  • Their double-act in 'Wake Up India' (2013) was so well-received that the director, Anil Sharma, cast them again as a comic duo in a TV pilot that never aired. That pilot's script later inspired a minor character in a popular web series — a ripple that started with these two.
  • For 'Bhooth Bangla' (2026), Joshi personally called Asrani to return from semi-retirement. Asrani agreed on one condition: they shoot all their scenes together in one continuous block, like a stage play. The director agreed, and they finished their portions in three days flat.
