The Rishi Kapoor & Neetu Singh partnership

After 29 years apart, they came back together for Love Aaj Kal (2009). They didn't share a set between 1980 and 2009. They saved their best for last — Do Dooni Chaar (6.9/10) came 31 years in.

Their work runs across 4 decades of Hindi cinema. From Duniya Meri Jeb Mein (1979) to Besharam (2013).

The shape of the work

The 1970s belonged to Jhoota Kahin Ka; the 2010s to Do Dooni Chaar. Rishi Kapoor acted in every film; Neetu Singh acted in all of them. Strictly Hindi cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • They were already married for 29 years when they signed 'Love Aaj Kal' (2009). Director Imtiaz Ali didn't know they were a couple — he just wanted two actors who could play a long-married couple with zero awkwardness. Rishi and Neetu didn't tell him until after the first reading.
  • On 'Do Dooni Chaar' (2010), Neetu would deliberately flub her lines in the first take to make Rishi laugh. She knew he was nervous about playing a middle-class dad after decades of playing rich brats. His laughter loosened him up, and the second take was always the keeper.
  • 'Do Dooni Chaar' (2010) was the first Hindi film to win the National Award for Best Feature Film in the Family Welfare category. That award exists only because Rishi and Neetu convinced the director to shoot in real Delhi homes instead of a set — the authenticity became the film's calling card.
  • During the making of 'Dhan Daulat' (1980), Rishi and Neetu were secretly dating. They'd tell the unit they were going for 'separate lunch breaks' — then meet at a dhaba 20 minutes away. The driver was the only one who knew, and he kept the secret for 40 years.
  • Neetu said about 'Besharam' (2013): 'I told Rishi, "This is the last film we do together. I don't want people to remember us like this." He laughed and said, "They'll remember us for the other five." He was right.'
