The Akshay Kumar & Umesh Mehra partnership

From Sabse Bada Khiladi (1995) to International Khiladi (1999). The played out closed with International Khiladi in 1999. It started with Sabse Bada Khiladi (1995).

The shape of the work

Akshay Kumar acted in every film; Umesh Mehra directed all of them. Strictly Hindi cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Umesh Mehra had already directed Akshay in 'Khiladi' (1992) and 'Main Khiladi Tu Anari' (1994). But for 'Sabse Bada Khiladi' (1995), Mehra wanted to cast a different actor as the villain. Akshay convinced him to let him play both hero and villain — a double role that became the film's biggest talking point.
  • Mehra gave Akshay complete freedom to design his own action sequences. In 'Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi' (1996), Akshay choreographed the climax fight on a moving train himself — Mehra just set up the camera and let him run. That scene is still cut into YouTube compilations of 90s action.
  • Because of their three-film run, Mehra's production house 'Mehra Movies' became the go-to label for action masala in the late 90s. The success of 'Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi' directly led to Mehra producing 'Judaai' (1997) — a completely different genre — using the profits from this collaboration.
  • Akshay and Mehra never had a formal contract for any of these three films. They shook hands on each project. Mehra later said in an interview that Akshay never asked for a written agreement — and never missed a single day of shoot.
  • Umesh Mehra once said: 'Akshay would call me at 4 AM with a new idea for a fight scene. I'd tell him to sleep. He'd show up on set at 6 AM with the entire sequence already rehearsed with the stuntmen.'
