The Pankaj Kapoor & Vishal Bharadwaj partnership

From Maqbool (2004) to Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola (2013). Maqbool is the one most viewers reach for. It started with Maqbool (2004).

The shape of the work

The 2000s belonged to Maqbool; the 2010s to Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola. Pankaj Kapoor acted in every film; Vishal Bharadwaj directed all of them. Strictly Hindi cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Vishal Bhardwaj didn't initially think of Pankaj Kapur for Maqbool. He wanted Naseeruddin Shah. But Kapur read the script, called Bhardwaj, and said, 'I have to play this role.' Bhardwaj later admitted Kapur's intensity in the audition changed the entire tone of the film.
  • On the set of Maqbool, Bhardwaj let Kapur improvise almost all his dialogue. Kapur would rewrite his lines in Urdu on the spot, and Bhardwaj would just nod and say, 'Chalo, let's roll.' That's how Abbaji's poetic menace was born — not from the script, but from Kapur rewriting in real time.
  • The Blue Umbrella was the only children's film Bhardwaj ever made, and Kapur played a simple shopkeeper with zero villainy. That film directly inspired a wave of small-town, non-masala Hindi children's movies — including the later 'Chillar Party' and 'Gattu' — because producers saw a market for gentle, rural stories.
  • During the shoot of Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola, Kapur and Bhardwaj would have a standing dinner argument every night about whether the film was a comedy or a tragedy. Bhardwaj wanted it darker; Kapur kept pushing for more slapstick. The final cut is a weird hybrid because neither one fully won.
  • Vishal Bhardwaj once said about Pankaj Kapur: 'He is the only actor who can make me rewrite a scene at 2 AM. I'd write something, he'd read it, look at me, and say, "Yeh toh bakwas hai." And he'd be right.'
