The Sanjay Dutt & Ajay Kashyap partnership

Between 1985 and 1992, they barely worked apart — 6 films in 7 years. For 7 years, a Sanjay–Ajay film arrived almost every year. From Jaan Ki Baazi (1985) to Sahebzaade (1992).

The ran closed with Sahebzaade in 1992. It started with Jaan Ki Baazi (1985).

The shape of the work

The 1980s account for 67% of everything they made together. The 1980s belonged to Do Qaidi; the 1990s to Do Matwale. Sanjay Dutt acted in every film; Ajay Kashyap directed all of them. Strictly Hindi cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Their first film together, Jaan Ki Baazi (1985), was a last-minute pairing. The original lead dropped out, and producer-director S. A. Kader handed the script to both Dutt and Kashyap on the same day. They signed without reading it fully.
  • In Do Qaidi (1989), Kashyap played the comic sidekick while Dutt did the heavy action. But on set, Kashyap would rewrite his own lines to make Dutt laugh mid-scene. Dutt once said Kashyap’s improvisations forced him to stay sharp — he couldn't just rely on his star presence.
  • During the shoot of Naam O Nishan (1987), Dutt was going through his first major drug bust case. Kashyap was the only co-star who visited him at his home, not the hospital. They’d sit in silence for hours. Kashyap later said, 'I didn't go to talk. I went so he knew someone was there.'
  • Do Matwale (1991) was the first Hindi film to feature a full rap-style song in a fight scene. The track 'Main Hoon Don' was written by Kashyap and performed by Dutt. It directly inspired the rap intro in Rangeela (1995) — Aamir Khan’s character even references the style.
  • Ajay Kashyap on Sanjay Dutt, in a 1993 interview: 'He never once asked me to step back from a scene. Most heroes want the close-up. Sanju would say, 'You take the line, I’ll take the reaction.' That’s rare.'
  • After Sahebzaade (1992) flopped, the two never worked together again. But every year on Dutt’s birthday, Kashyap would send a box of mangoes — no note, no call. Dutt’s staff knew it was from him. This went on until Kashyap’s death in 2014.
