The R. Sundarrajan & Goundamani partnership

From Payanangal Mudivathillai (1982) to Periya Idathu Maapillai (1997). The unfolded closed with Periya Idathu Maapillai in 1997. Payanangal Mudivathillai is the one most viewers reach for.

It started with Payanangal Mudivathillai (1982).

The shape of the work

The 1980s belonged to Payanangal Mudivathillai; the 1990s to Thirumathi Palanisamy. Never on the same side of the camera — R. Sundarrajan director, Goundamani actor, across all 4 films. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Goundamani was already a star when R. Sundarrajan was a struggling director. Sundarrajan personally went to Goundamani's house and narrated the script of Thazhuvatha Kaigal (1986) on the spot. Goundamani said yes right there — no formal meeting, no manager.
  • In Thirumathi Palanisamy (1992), Sundarrajan wrote a scene where Goundamani's character has to cry while eating. Goundamani refused to do it with glycerin. So Sundarrajan fed him real raw onion mid-shot. The tears you see are real — and Goundamani never forgave him for the prank.
  • After Periya Idathu Maapillai (1997) flopped, Sundarrajan and Goundamani had a massive fight over the film's editing. They didn't speak for 11 years. Goundamani later said in a 2008 interview that he regretted the silence — but neither ever called the other first.
  • Goundamani once told a magazine: 'Sundarrajan is the only director who made me act like a human being. Every other director just wanted me to make faces.'
  • The comedy track in Thirumathi Palanisamy (1992) — where Goundamani plays a henpecked husband — directly inspired Crazy Mohan's later hit screenplay for Michael Madana Kama Rajan (1990). Mohan admitted in an interview that he watched that film five times in theatre.
  • Sundarrajan never wrote full dialogues for Goundamani. He'd just give him a situation and let him improvise. In Thazhuvatha Kaigal (1986), Goundamani's entire 'kattipudi' rant was ad-libbed. Sundarrajan kept the camera rolling and used the first take.
