Partnership facts

• Suresh and Karthik were both newcomers when they signed Ilanjodigal (1982). The director picked them because they looked like actual college students — no makeup, no star baggage. They shot the film in real classrooms and hostels.
• In Apoorva Sahodarigal (1983), Suresh played the serious brother and Karthik the comic relief. But on set, they swapped roles between takes — Karthik would rehearse Suresh's lines deadpan, making Suresh laugh so hard they'd have to re-shoot.
• Their third film Nandri (1984) was the first Tamil movie to feature a double-role for both lead actors simultaneously — each played twins. That gimmick later inspired a wave of twin comedies in the late 80s.
• During the shoot of Ilanjodigal, Suresh and Karthik shared a single room in a lodge near the set. They'd stay up all night rewriting each other's dialogues. Karthik later said they didn't sleep for three months — just talked cinema.
• Karthik once said in a 1990s interview: 'Suresh was the only co-star who would wake me up at 4 AM to rehearse. I hated it then. Now I miss it.'
