Partnership facts

• Azhagappan was a debutant director when he cast Suresh in Agaya Thamaraigal (1985). He picked Suresh because he wanted a fresh face who could look both innocent and intense — and Suresh was the only actor who showed up to the narration without an entourage.
• On the sets of Pookalai Parikatheergal (1986), Suresh would rewrite his own dialogues in Tamil slang during lunch breaks. Azhagappan let him keep most of those changes — that film’s raw, conversational tone became their signature.
• Poo Mazhai Pozhiyudhu (1987) was the first Tamil film to use a single-song montage to show a couple aging together — a technique later copied by at least three major directors in the 1990s.
• After Kungama Kodu (1988) bombed, Azhagappan called Suresh and said, “I’m done.” Suresh convinced him to stay in the industry by offering to act in his next film for free. That film never got made, but they remained friends until Azhagappan’s retirement.
• Suresh once told a magazine: “Azhagappan never shouted on set. He’d just look at me with those tired eyes, and I’d know I had to do better. That silence was scarier than any director’s scream.”
