• Azhagam Perumal was cast in Theri (2016) because director Atlee specifically wanted a face that felt like a real, menacing local don — not a polished actor. Rajendran, already a star comedian, recommended Perumal for the role after they met on a previous set.
• In Natpuna Ennanu Theriyuma (2019), Rajendran played the straight man to Azhagam Perumal's loud, impulsive friend. Rajendran deliberately slowed his delivery in every scene to let Perumal's energy pop — a rhythm they never rehearsed, just figured out on the first day of shoot.
• During the making of Dharma Prabhu (2019), the two shared a room in a budget lodge in Tirunelveli for 40 days. Rajendran later said they spent nights rewriting each other's dialogues on hotel notepads because the original script felt flat.
• Rajendran once said in a 2019 interview: 'Azhagam is the only actor who can make me forget my lines — because I'm too busy laughing at his face. We had to do 14 retakes for one scene in Natpuna Ennanu Theriyuma because of that.'
