• Mrinal Sen cast Shabana Azmi in 'Khandhar' (1984) after being blown away by her performance in 'Arth' — but he made her audition anyway. She later said that audition was the most terrifying of her career because Sen kept staring at her without saying a word for five minutes before finally nodding.
• On the set of 'Ek Din Achanak' (1989), Sen would deliberately give Azmi the wrong blocking just before a take. He wanted her to react in real time, not perform. She called it 'acting without a safety net' — and it gave her most spontaneous performance in their three-film run.
• Their first collaboration, 'Genesis' (1968), was the only film where Sen worked with a professional Hindi film star (Azmi) instead of his usual non-actors. That experiment opened the door for other parallel cinema directors to cast mainstream actors — directly leading to Shyam Benegal casting Shabana in 'Ankur' (1974).
• After 'Khandhar' wrapped, Sen and Azmi stayed in touch through letters for years — he wrote her long, handwritten notes in Bengali, which she couldn't read. She'd get her mother to translate them. One letter, she later revealed, simply said: 'You are the daughter I never had.'
• Shabana Azmi on Mrinal Sen: 'He didn't direct actors — he provoked them. With him, I wasn't playing a character. I was discovering her in real time.' She said this in a 2019 interview with Film Companion, recalling the making of 'Ek Din Achanak'.
