• Benegal cast Kapur as Mahatma Gandhi in 'The Making of the Mahatma' (1996) after seeing him in a play — but Kapur was so nervous about the role that he asked Benegal to let him do a screen test. Benegal refused, saying he already knew Kapur could do it.
• On the set of 'Suraj Ka Satvan Ghoda' (1992), Benegal made Kapur rehearse each scene in a single take before rolling camera. Kapur later said this forced him to find the character's rhythm without relying on editing — a discipline he carried into every film after.
• Kapur has said Benegal never once raised his voice at him across three films. Instead, when Kapur messed up a take, Benegal would just say 'Let's try again' in a flat tone — which Kapur found more terrifying than any yelling.
• Their collaboration on 'The Making of the Mahatma' (1996) directly led to Kapur being cast as Gandhi again in the 2006 documentary 'Gandhi's Children' — a role he would never have gotten without Benegal's trust in him.
• Kapur once said about Benegal: 'He doesn't direct you — he creates a space where you direct yourself. That's harder, because you have no one to blame but yourself.'
• For 'Welcome to Sajjanpur' (2008), Benegal wrote the role of the postmaster specifically for Kapur — their first comedy together after two heavy dramas. Kapur said he was terrified of being funny, so Benegal made him watch Charlie Chaplin films every morning before shoot.
