Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar is a 2000 Indian English-language biographical film directed by Jabbar Patel. The film stars Mammootty as Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, with Sonali Kulkarni, Mrinal Kulkarni, and Mohan Gokhale in supporting roles. It chronicles Ambedkar's life from his childhood facing caste discrimination to his education at Columbia University and the London School of Economics, his political battles with Mahatma Gandhi and the Indian National Congress, and his pivotal role as the chairman of the Drafting Committee of the Indian Constituent Assembly. The film also depicts his conversion to Buddhism in 1956. Produced by the National Film Development Corporation of India (NFDC), the film is noted for its historical accuracy and detailed production design. Mammootty won the National Film Award for Best Actor for his portrayal. The film had a limited release at film festivals in Canada and was released in India on December 15, 2000.

Storyline
Born an untouchable in colonial India, Bhimrao Ambedkar faces humiliation from childhood. He fights for education and earns multiple degrees abroad. He returns to lead the fight for Dalit rights against a caste-obsessed society. His biggest battle is with Mahatma Gandhi over political representation. He eventually writes the Indian Constitution and converts to Buddhism.
