Idaya Kovil is a 1985 Indian Tamil-language romantic drama film directed by Mani Ratnam. It stars Mohan, Ambika, Radha, and Goundamani in lead roles. The story follows Shankar, a famous singer haunted by the suicide of his first love Gauri. A college student named Suriya tries to save him from alcoholism but falls in love with him. The film explores guilt, unrequited love, and tragic sacrifice. Ilaiyaraaja composed the music and wrote lyrics for the title track. The film was a commercial success at the box office. Mani Ratnam later expressed dissatisfaction with the film due to creative compromises forced by the producer. It was released on 14 September 1985.

Storyline

Shankar is a famous singer drowning in guilt and alcohol. His first love Gauri died because he failed to meet her. Suriya, a college girl, breaks into his home and forces him to perform. She helps him quit drinking and falls in love with him. But Shankar cannot let go of his past. His refusal to love her leads to another tragedy.
