Muthal Mariyathai is a 1985 Indian Tamil-language romantic drama film directed, produced, and co-written by Bharathiraja. The film stars Sivaji Ganesan and Radha in lead roles, with Vadivukkarasi, Deepan, Ranjini, Janagaraj, Sathyaraj, Aruna, Veerasamy, and Ramanathan in supporting roles. The story follows Malaichami, an unhappily married village chief, who develops a close friendship with Kuyil, a young low-caste boatwoman. Their bond faces severe social scrutiny from the village community. The film was shot entirely in Talakadu, Karnataka, and features music composed by Ilaiyaraaja with lyrics by Vairamuthu. It won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil and Best Lyrics, and both lead actors won Filmfare Awards. The film was a commercial success, running for over 200 days in theatres. A digitally restored version was released in March 2023.

Storyline
