The Bharathiraja & Sivaji Ganesan partnership

After 11 years apart, they came back together for Pasumpon (1995). They didn't share a set between 1984 and 1995. From Thavani Kanavugal (1983) to Pasumpon (1995).

It started with Thavani Kanavugal (1983). The played out closed with Pasumpon in 1995.

The shape of the work

The 1980s belonged to Thavani Kanavugal; the 1990s to Pasumpon. Never on the same side of the camera — Bharathiraja director, Sivaji Ganesan actor, across all 3 films. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Bharathiraja was a huge Sivaji fan since childhood. But for their first film together, Thavani Kanavugal (1983), Sivaji initially said no. He thought the director's raw, village style wouldn't suit his image. Bharathiraja convinced him by narrating the entire script in one sitting at Sivaji's house.
  • On the sets of Muthal Mariyathai (1984), Sivaji would deliberately flub his lines in the first take. He did this to make Bharathiraja step in and correct him. The director later realized Sivaji was testing him — to see if he had the guts to tell a legend he was wrong. Once Sivaji saw that, he trusted Bharathiraja completely.
  • Muthal Mariyathai (1984) directly launched the career of actor Radha. She was a newcomer, and Sivaji insisted on pairing with her despite producers wanting a bigger name. The film's success made Radha a star overnight. She later credited Sivaji and Bharathiraja for her entire career.
  • After Pasumpon (1995) flopped hard, Sivaji called Bharathiraja and said, 'Don't worry, this is not your fault. I was too old for the role. I should have said no.' The director broke down on the phone. They never worked together again, but Sivaji sent him a handwritten note a week later: 'You made me young in two films. That's enough for a lifetime.'
  • Bharathiraja once said in a 2018 interview: 'Sivaji sir was like a lion on set. But when I said 'action', he became a lamb in my hands. He gave me the power to direct him. That is the greatest gift an actor can give a director.'
