- The legendary singer K. B. Sundarambal, who played the older saint, was already a revered figure in Tamil culture for her devotional music.
- Director A. P. Nagarajan was known for his mythological films, but this was one of his few focusing entirely on a female saint.
- The film's music director, Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan, was primarily a renowned classical violinist, not a regular film composer.
- Actress Lakshmi, who played the younger Punithavathi, was only about 17 years old during the film's production.
- The movie is based on ancient Tamil Saiva literature, specifically the stories of the 63 Nayanmars, which are rarely the sole subject of a feature film.
- Despite its religious theme, the film featured popular comedy actors like Manorama in supporting roles to balance the narrative.
